Pants? Are You Serious?

So I just watched a piece of the Dr. Phil show on sagging pants. I knew I shouldn't have watched and that it would only serve to piss me off, but I spent ten minutes of my time watching it anyway. From what I gather, some idiot is trying to get a countrywide ban on saggy pants and any other type of "offensive" clothing. What makes me so tired is the lack of focus on what actually matters. If you have real concern for youth and young black males in particular, then why aren't you seeking a ban on illiteracy, drug dealing, becoming an unmarried father, or all-around laziness? Seriously, have we nothing more to concern ourselves with other than how low a young man's pants are? Black folks have so much work to do and I can't imagine it starting with a pair of pants. Too often I see middle-aged black people attacking young black people based on their choice of clothing and music. Never is it productive. It only serves to drive a bigger wedge between the generations. Most of us know that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Instead of focusing energy on low-hanging pants, why are we not spending time attacking our real problems at the root? Black folks are disenfranchised. We are the recipients of disrespect, disregard, and discrimination of a racial nature. To combat that, we should be providing our young people with the tools on how to play the game to win. Instead, time is spent insulting their choices and making them further resolve to be contrary to success. My God, if as much time was spent on cultivating our youth's minds and engaging them in thought provoking verbal interaction as is spent on picking at them, we would have the most successful, amazing, intelligent youth. As it stands, we already have that. They just tend to be a little rough around the edges. Middle-aged black Americans are supposed to be the sand paper instead of the wrecking ball. Why can we not exert this negative energy on being pre-active (yes, I know it's normally proactive but I use "pre" because we should be cutting this off before it even has a chance to grow) instead of reactive? Of course I don't want to see anyone's underwear when I'm out in public but more so than that, I don't want to see another young man standing on a street corner talking about and doing nothing. I don't want to see anymore young black men giving up and succumbing to the stereotypical status quo because they don't believe in their royal blood. I don't want to see anymore of our young men thinking the more babies they make, the more manly they are. Once we focus on these important matters, the pants will end up where they need to be.
